A Trestle's Secondary Function

Trestles are typically used for temporary events, and bulky to be kept when not in use due to the triangulated legs.

So... What if Trestles had a secondary function? What defines a “function”? Through a journey of exploration, designs are created with the opinions formulated with the various tryouts.

Unconventional forms as trestles

Initial Explorations

Thinking in terms of form, utility, fabrication, mechanisms and interaction, we explored a series of secondary functions that a trestle could have.

Finding Parallels in everyday objects as trestles
Using Friction as a mean of locking the wooden parts together without any screws or joints
Interactions through gestures or materials
Use of simple rod as a mean to keep the trestles as flat as possible
Use of tension in strings to support the trestle and to flat pack trestles
Use of a gradual curve to create a trestle that reduces leg space and is visually pleasing against the wall.

Shortlisted/Narrowing Directions

Stacking sidewards to create a wall bench with minimal material. (Shorlisted)

Iterations and Refinements

Experimenting with the angle for triangulation for stability

Experimenting with joineries

Optimising fabrication is important as it affects both the cost of production, the material wastage and stability of the furniture piece.
